Flying in for surgery: a packing and logistics checklist

Your coordinator confirms every logistical detail with you individually before you travel — this is a general guide to what tends to matter most.

Before you book flights

• Wait for written confirmation of your surgery date from your coordinator before purchasing non-refundable tickets.
• Plan to arrive at least 2 days before surgery for your pre-op assessment and bloodwork.
• Build in a buffer day after your discharge clearance in case of flight changes — don't book a same-day departure.

Documents to bring

• Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
• Printed or digital copies of your referral/support letter, if required for your case.
• A list of current medications, allergies and relevant medical history.
• Travel insurance documents, including any post-operative travel coverage.

What to pack

• Loose, front-opening tops — anything that pulls over your head is difficult and uncomfortable to wear post-surgery.
• A travel pillow for the flight home, to avoid pressure on your chest.
• Comfortable, supportive shoes for light walking, which is encouraged from day one.
• Entertainment for downtime — most of your recovery week is spent resting in your hotel.
• A phone charger and adapter — Turkey uses type C/F sockets (230V).

What your coordinator handles

Airport pickup, hotel booking, all transfers to and from the hospital, and translation support if needed are arranged for you as part of every package — you don't need to book local transport or figure out hospital logistics yourself.

Getting home afterward

You'll be cleared to fly once drains are out (if applicable) and your surgical team is satisfied with your healing, typically around day 7. Request a wheelchair or early-boarding assistance at check-in — most airlines offer this without a doctor's note for domestic short-haul, though international carriers may ask for a simple fitness-to-fly note, which your coordinator can arrange.
